Mar. 5th, 2008 02:48 pmSo I've been looking for a career for a while. Currently, I'm a jack of all trades which is reflected in my resume. I'd like to have something more solid so I've been looking at programs in my area. So far, three master's programs have struck me as doable; library science(USC), kindergarten teaching(CofC) and nurse-midwifery(MUSC). I like the library science idea, but am not sure about the ease of finding a job later. The kindergarten teacher, I think, is not the best fit. I find other kindergarten teachers sometimes annoying, and I live somewhere where teachers in any school receive death threats.
Nurse-Midwifery is in the lead and I've sent off for more info. The program seems respected and there are local hospital sponsored scholarships available. I've thought about training to be a doula, so I've been interested in the field, but I never thought about actually studying to be a midwife. There are not a lot of medical personnel in the family, so I never really considered it as a career, plus I have no desire to be a doctor.
Does anyone have any thoughts about that as a career in general or at MUSC or for me, in particular? My mom has not been entirely supportive of the idea so I thought I'd get other opinions.

Not sure how I feel about the sciences--it's been a long time. Before I applied to the nursing school, I'd have to have 22 hrs of prereqs so I figure that would be a good test to see if I hate the sciences or can't do them.

Date: 2008-03-05 10:29 pm (UTC)How do you feel about making split-second life critical decisions? Being on-call a lot? Being available for questions and reassurances at all hours? Being in a medical field? Working in a very important field with less than important respect from the DR.Medicals?

Date: 2008-03-06 01:29 pm (UTC)Good questions! Some things to think about.
I don't mind the on call parts or the all hours need for reassurance--I mean, I'm sure it would be annoying sometimes, but that level of being available doesn't bother me.
From what I've read and talked to people about this, there aren't as many split second decisions in midwifery---at least not as if I were going to be a surgeon or anything---but that is one reason I'm looking at the certified nurse midwife program as opposed to the direct entry midwife apprenticeship; I would feel, I think, much more prepared with the classes.
As far as the lack of respect, it would be irritating. My ideal would be to work in a birthing center, and have less interaction with MDs. But things might not work out like that.

Worth another look.
