The 1 hour gestational diabetes test didn't go so well--I failed and had to do the three hour test last Tues. Fri, Sat, and Sun, I was on a high carb diet, followed by fasting from Sun night until Mon. At 10am Mon, my midwife drew a fasting blood sample, then I had to drink another orange drink with 100g of glucose and wait for my blood to be drawn again 1, 2 and 3 hours later. She called last night to let me know that I had failed again--in fact, if we'd been in a hospital, she said that they would've stopped the test at the fasting blood draw because the numbers were too high.

Now I'm on a special food plan, which is very high protein/lowcarb, which ironically enough is how I was eating before we found out I was pregnant and changed to the pregnancy high carb diet, and have to test my blood 4 times a day. If the diet doesn't control it, then I have to go on insulin. Either way, I can't deliver at the birthing center--it has to be in the hospital--and if I need insulin, the midwives won't treat me and I have to switch to an OB.

I'm trying to stay positive about this--there's still a good chance I'll have a decent rest of this pregnancy and a normal birth, but the high intervention rate for women with gestational diabetes makes me really nervous. I just need to talk to my midwives some more abt what sorts of things to expect.

Oh my! I hope you've got good enough midwives that you can trust them to do all your worrying for you. Leaves you more energy to focus on what a wonderful baby you're going to have!

*hugs*

Hey- I know it sounds bad but you'll probably be able to control it with diet. It was probably the change in your diet that caused it anyway. It is possible that people get gestational diabetes b/c of the way that doctors tell people to eat while they are gestating. I know Tracy had some similar issues but she did not have to take insulin (if my memory serves me right). She also "magically" had some colon issues that she had never had before. So, don't worry. You'll probably feel better soon (other than the beachball). Hang in there!!!!!!

I'm sorry to hear this...I hope the food types change is all that's necessary to control it, and I hope it's a congenial change for you.

**BIG HUGS!!!**

I'm sorry that you have to contend with this, but I'm crossing my fingers that the dietary change will be enough to control it. I've known a few people who had it, and they've all been able to control it via diet, and I'm crossing my fingers for you.

Sending you a virtual omelet, sweetie!
