Apr. 21st, 2005 01:39 pmThe 1 hour gestational diabetes test didn't go so well--I failed and had to do the three hour test last Tues. Fri, Sat, and Sun, I was on a high carb diet, followed by fasting from Sun night until Mon. At 10am Mon, my midwife drew a fasting blood sample, then I had to drink another orange drink with 100g of glucose and wait for my blood to be drawn again 1, 2 and 3 hours later. She called last night to let me know that I had failed again--in fact, if we'd been in a hospital, she said that they would've stopped the test at the fasting blood draw because the numbers were too high.
Now I'm on a special food plan, which is very high protein/lowcarb, which ironically enough is how I was eating before we found out I was pregnant and changed to the pregnancy high carb diet, and have to test my blood 4 times a day. If the diet doesn't control it, then I have to go on insulin. Either way, I can't deliver at the birthing center--it has to be in the hospital--and if I need insulin, the midwives won't treat me and I have to switch to an OB.
I'm trying to stay positive about this--there's still a good chance I'll have a decent rest of this pregnancy and a normal birth, but the high intervention rate for women with gestational diabetes makes me really nervous. I just need to talk to my midwives some more abt what sorts of things to expect.

Date: 2005-04-21 04:59 pm (UTC)I'm sorry that you have to contend with this, but I'm crossing my fingers that the dietary change will be enough to control it. I've known a few people who had it, and they've all been able to control it via diet, and I'm crossing my fingers for you.
Sending you a virtual omelet, sweetie!
