Made it home last night without running out of gas! Yay! Ran home to collect family to walk over to Momma's, pick her up and walk down to church for Weds night supper. Husband had not yet showered or redressed baby. New plan--entertained baby while husband dressed, drove over the Momma's, then drove to church: a whopping 5 blocks from her house. But we would've been late otherwise and there were concerns about the weather, unfounded as it turned out. As it was, we were early enough to snag one of the precious few parking places and then an off to the side table.

This was A's first Weds night supper, so he wasn't quite sure what to expect--he should know if I actually go, then it's not really religious. And it wasn't. (The normal activities options consist of: short service before supper (v. badly attended); supper w/grace said; after supper classes or lecture or choir practice.) One of the reasons I go? The nursery is open the whole time, so I can feed the baby, send him off the to nursery, which he loves, and then eat dinner in peace.

I filled A in on the plan--we fed the baby dinner while we ate our salads, and when he said, "I'm done. Get down! Play!" I took him to nursery (he really wasn't v. hungry--didn't even want ice cream) and then we filled our plates from the small buffet--fried chicken, baked chicken (not the healthy kind), dressing (made w/chicken, boiled egg and celery), peas, succotash, mixed carrots/cauliflower/broccoli, rolls w/butter, cocktail shrimp, lasagna, fruit salad, cube cheese, and hard boiled eggs. You might notice that that list loses some cohesiveness towards the end. Last time we had fried porkchops w/appropriate trimmings, and egg rolls. Egg rolls. The further down the buffet you get, and the later in the dinner it gets, the odder the things they put out. Talked with my mom through dinner, introduced A to an old boyfriend, met someone who graduated w/ my dad, normal church supper stuff.

Part way through dinner, I saw a familiar but unexpected face at the door--Anna Beth! Hadn't seen her since her wedding some 7 years ago, even though we lived in the city at the same time. We hugged, but with newfound NYC reserve (none of the old cheerleader squealing), and arranged to chat after supper. It was so good to see her and we talked for a good 45 min, until her parents insisted they had to go. I met her husband and her two kids, and introduced her to A and Royce. We talked about motherhood and the city and old friends and our new lives, and then exchanged emails and phone numbers. I missed the lecture (by our old assistant minister who used to teach college english and be married to patricia cornwell, the writer), but it was much more fun to catch up.

After dinner, we drove my mom home and then headed back to the apartment--A was going to go over to KS's but decided to stay home, being full and sleepy. After playing in the nursery fro two hours, the baby was extremely tired and fell asleep watching Goodnight Gorilla. (It's no wonder he was tired, when we took AB in to see him, he was wresting with the older kids, leaping on their backs and joining in the dogpiles.) We stayed up for a few hours, watching the 1st season of How I Met Your Mother on DVD and checking for the eclipse. Too cloudy to see anything, sadly, so we went to bed abt 11pm.
