So, I'm not really hysterical anymore, but...

Yesterday, I had a pleasant day of shopping and lunching planned. Slept nice and late, lounged about the house for a bit, read news while waiting for a friend to arrive. She came in the house and our conversation went something like this:

"Hey! Where's the boy?"

"Fishing."

"Cool. Where are the dogs?"

Well, she had to pass them to get in the house, so I said, "Um, in the yard."

To which she replied, "No, and your porch door was open." (There are two entrances to the yard, the gate and the door to the porch which opens onto the street.)

So much for lounging.

We ran out into the street--she went further down the block and I headed to the corner. After calling them for several minutes, Sam showed up on the porch as if he'd been there all along, but Madeline was still not found. When I turned around to check the other side of the block, I saw her. Trotting across the Crosstown. The Crosstown is big. 6 or 8 lanes big. Big enough that pedestrians, which are rare, have to cross in two segments because the walk signal isn't long enough to get you all the way across the street unless you run. Which I did. Ran out into traffic, grabbed her and ran her back to the house. Couldn't decide whether to throttle her or kiss her to death.
