My weekend
Jun. 30th, 2008 10:00 amMy weekend was actually pretty good, but the fact that they leave on Tues made it a bit sad. 11 days. *sigh*
So let's see...
Friday--Had appointment with new to me doctor at the same office where my midwife works. My midwife wanted me to alternate seeing her and an MD because I have all these problems. Well, we won't be alternating anymore because Dr Wilson rocks. She's made of win. Whereas, as it turns out, the midwife? Not so much. In fact, I'm pretty pissed at her. Not only did she give me the "oooga booga booga! you're going to kill your baby and die" speech about my blood pressure but she ordered a bunch of tests. A bunch of tests that not only did the techs at the hospital ask why in the world I was getting them (after assuming I was having surgery or something) but Dr Wilson asked why she had ordered them. I think I know why.
When I was looking up normal sugar levels in a diabetes book at B&N on Sunday, I noticed the diagnostic section. Every one of the tests she ordered is part of the diabetes work up--24 urine, some 3 month blood sugar blood test, and an ekg. Even though when we talked about my gestational diabetes diagnosis form my last pregnancy and I told her that I had failed the glucose tests but never had abnormal levels after that (finger pricks multiple times daily for months), she decided that since I had high blood pressure and was OMG fat, I must be diabetic. Which is also why when I suggested that I was willing to go on the blood pressure meds right away but would rather wait until I saw the endocrinologist for any other tests, she freaked out and started (some level in between normal talking and yelling) at me about stroke and placenta previa. Because she didn't believe me that my blood pressure was directly related to my hyperthryoid.
Oh, and she also told me on my first visit that I could not have a VBAC (vaginal birth after c section) because it was against their policy but that I could go to another practice although she didn't think they would let me either because of my previous problems (pre-eclampsia). Um, turns out that's not true. The first thing Dr Wilson asked me about when she walked in, after the pleasantries were over, was whether I wanted to VBAC. After some confusion, she explained that I was completely free to VBAC and they would continue my care until I went into labor, but I couldn't labor at the small hospital where they have privileges (East Cooper) just in case something went wrong as they don't have an anesthesiologist all the time or much blood on hand (and I'm b-) so I'd have to give birth at MUSC (a huge hospital) and they'd refer me to another OB at the time. Afterwards, they'd be happy to do the post-partum care. So that's an entirely different story and one that makes more sense--I know there are places that don't allow a VBAC so it's nice to know this isn't one. And the reason I'd have to have someone else presiding makes sense too. It doesn't really bother me because it's luck of the draw anyway--it'd be whoever was on call where ever I went.
So this appt went much better--my blood pressure was normal and Dr Wilson commented on how well a very low dose of the medication worked. We talked about my endocrinologist appt coming up and decided that I should go although she was willing to treat me as my hyper ness isn't too bad. She was not at all freaked out by any of my issues--said the blood pressure was clearly easily controlled and yes, part of normal thyroid problems; said my sugars were fine and I didn't have to do the glucose challenge early; gave me the VBAC option; and was generally pleasant, noncondescending and funny.
Wow, this was longer than I'd expected. But I'm just so happy about it. ;)
